Mental health issues in everyday life. Stress is an everyday occurrence in today’s world.. Health experts know that stress can have significant effects on both your physical and mental health. Learning to deal with common stress is an important way to maintain health and improve your sense of well being.

What Is Stress?

Stress is the body responses to extreme conditions, releasing “fight or flight” hormones and other chemicals that tense muscles for action and prepare emotions for fast response. Stress has evolutionary roots, in that humans developed these responses in order to run from danger, fight marauding enemies or move quickly away from natural hazards. However, the response remains even though we live in societies where these events no longer occur. The body “overreacts” to everyday events with heightened tension on a frequent basis. And this frequency is what causes stress to build up to unhealthy levels.

Recognizing Stress Overload

When stress becomes an everyday occurrence, individuals may experience a variety of physical and emotions issues. Muscle aches, neck pain and headaches become a frequent problem. The individual may develop sleep problems, unable to fall asleep or stay asleep during the night. Individuals may feel tired all the time. Digestive problems may develop. Self-esteem issues may surface, or individuals may isolate themselves from others. These are signs that require action to relieve the chronic feeling of stress.
